Scam vs. Spam
Scam = is a way to defraud people
Spam = is unsolicited bulk emails
Be aware scam artists are out there, whether by recorded phone calls, text or email. If you or your client are ever in doubt, call the person and confirm the situation.
Keith and Paul will never text you with messages like:
I’m in a meeting, can you go buy 3 Google play gift cards $100 each and tear off the back tab and text back the numbers to me. Paul Hartke
I’m in an appointment now with a client and can’t talk on the phone ,but let me know if you get my text. Keith Hartke
“Can you run a task for me?”
“Can you buy gift cards for Paul, because he’s in a meeting?” It has Paul’s signature and picture.”
Next time you get one, just delete it.
Scammers can even go after your clients’ down payment by quoting the subject property address, date of settlement and settlement company with instructions to the buyer to wire the down payment to a scam location.
inform your client that unless its a personal phone call from you or the settlement company, they should never wire money if it’s a request by text or email. If I was the client, I would call the settlement company and get the wiring instructions.
Never wire money unless you are sure of its destination, because you can’t get it back.
